In the big US cities, it might be harder (since people are on guard), but yeah, there are areas where everyone says “hi” or “howdy.” I enjoyed my time in Australia, although I only have the experience of being in Sydney. I heard in Australia, it's a little less formal. When I was in college, my Aussie friends told me that they were called their professors by their first name, but I wouldn't dare say that in America.
