As for the ruler, I would've wondered the same thing. But after 5 years of traveling, there've been a number of times where I had to figure out the dimensions of something... and I don't have a ruler... my airbnb doesn't have a ruler... my host doesn't have a ruler... etc. So I just bought one for a few cents and it comes in handy.

For a quick trip, however, it's probably useless.
